There are many ways that you can elevate your fake plants so that they appear real and extra stylish. Below, three interior designers chime in with their top tips for integrating fake plants into the home.

Move Faux Plants Into Real Vessels

Part of the fun of decorating with plants is choosing a vessel that captures your attention. However, many fake plants come situated inside simple plastic vessels with faux dirt on top, which isn't the most convincing setup nor an aesthetically pleasing one. In order to make your fake plants appear as real as possible, you can try a couple of simple hacks.

Alexis Warren, the founder of Alexis Warren Designs, recommends placing your fake plant into a real vessel and using items like moss to make it look real.

Ania Agárdy, a designer, adds that placing stones or soil on top of fake plants will also make a major difference. Need to make your plant appear a bit taller in the pot? There's a hack for that, too, according to designer Liad Schwartz.

"After placing your tree in the pot, fill the base with plastic bags or shredded paper to achieve the desired height," he says.

When choosing a pot, consider going the vintage route for extra personality, Schwartz says. Take to your local thrift store or flea market in search of a pot that speaks to you and isn't one that you will come across in all of your friends' and neighbors' homes. Considering that brand new plant pots can be pricey, this is an excellent way to save some money, too.

Don't Be Afraid to Mix in Some Real Plants

By no means do you have to commit to solely real or fake plants in your home. Agárdy is a proponent of saying yes to both.

"Mixing them helps blur the line between what's real and what's not," she says.

Another one of her tips is to place fake plants in spots where real plants would thrive, such as on the windowsill or in well-lit rooms.

Stick With Smaller Plants

Warren has found over time that larger plants tend to appear less realistic than smaller fake ones, so she has become more discerning about the types that she buys. She personally loves sticking to orchids, moss, or smaller green leafy plants when she's looking around.

Look for Imperfect Elements

Additionally, be mindful to look for fake plants that don't appear too perfect.

"The more imperfect and organic in their shape, the more authentic in their appearance," Agárdy says. "Anything in a glossy finish or a bright green color tone is a no-go."

Rather, as Schwartz comments, trees with multiple shades of green in them are going to be more convincing.

"This variation in color mimics the natural look of real plants, making them appear more authentic," he says.

Don't Skimp on Price

While some fake plants are certainly on the more expensive end, Warren considers them to be a worthwhile investment due to their longevity. After all, they live forever with zero upkeep, she says.

4 Ways to Decorate Your Fencing: Simple and Creative Ideas

Fencing is an essential part of any outdoor space, providing privacy and defining boundaries. However, fences don’t have to be purely functional—they can also serve as a creative canvas to enhance the overall look of your garden or yard. Whether you’re aiming for a lush green aesthetic or a bold artistic statement, there are many ways to decorate your fencing. Here are four inspiring ideas to transform your outdoor space.

1.Use Artificial Green Walls

One of the most effective ways to elevate your fencing is by using outdoor green walls. Artificial green walls are a low-maintenance solution to achieve the lush, vibrant look of natural greenery without the hassle of regular upkeep. These installations are perfect for covering large fence areas, adding texture and colour to otherwise plain surfaces.

Ideas for Decorating with Artificial Green Walls

Artificial green walls can suit a variety of styles and preferences. For a modern look, consider a vertical installation featuring a mix of leafy greens and faux flowers. If you prefer a more uniform appearance, opt for classic boxwood panels. By incorporating an artificial green wall into your fencing design, you can instantly create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere in your outdoor space.

Tips for Artificial Green Walls

To ensure your artificial green wall looks natural and lasts for years, invest in high-quality materials designed for outdoor use. Look for UV-resistant options to prevent fading and discolouration caused by sunlight. Additionally, regularly clean your green wall panels to remove dirt and dust, keeping them looking fresh and vibrant.

2. Hang Suspended Plants

For a more dynamic approach, consider decorating your fence with hanging artificial plants. These suspended features create a cascading effect that adds depth and movement to your outdoor space. Hanging plants are versatile and work well with a variety of fence types, from timber to metal.

Ideas for Decorating with Hanging Plants

Use hanging baskets filled with lush artificial ferns or vines to create a cascading green effect along your fence line. Alternatively, try arranging multiple pots at varying heights to create a visually interesting display. Hanging artificial plants can also be combined with fairy lights for a whimsical touch that’s perfect for evening gatherings.

Tips for Hanging Plants

When hanging artificial plants, ensure that the mounting hardware is sturdy enough to support the weight of the pots or baskets. Use weather-resistant materials for hooks and brackets to prevent rusting or wear. Additionally, the hanging plants should be positioned at heights that balance visual appeal with accessibility for maintenance.

3. Add Painted Designs or Murals

If greenery isn’t your preferred style, painted designs or murals can be a fantastic way to personalise your fencing. This creative approach allows you to transform a plain fence into a work of art that reflects your personality or complements your garden’s aesthetic.

Ideas for Painted Fence Decorations

Choose a mural design that suits your outdoor theme. A beach scene or floral motif can create a calming vibe, while geometric patterns or abstract art can give your fencing a modern edge. For a child-friendly option, consider painting whimsical designs such as animals or fairytale scenes.

Tips for Painted Fences

When painting a fence, always start by preparing the surface. Sand down rough areas and apply a weather-resistant primer to ensure the paint adheres properly. Use high-quality exterior paint that’s designed to withstand outdoor conditions, and consider adding a clear protective sealant for extra durability.

4. Attach Decorative Panels or Features

Decorative panels and features are an excellent way to add texture and interest to your fencing. From laser-cut metal panels to wooden slats, these additions allow you to customise your fence while enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Ideas for Adding Panels

Laser-cut panels with intricate patterns can be mounted onto sections of your fence to create a striking visual feature. Alternatively, wooden lattice panels can add a rustic touch and also serve as a support for climbing plants. Panels can also be backlit with LED lights to create a stunning effect during the evening.

Additional Features to Add

Consider incorporating features such as mirrors, hanging lanterns, or even a water feature onto your fence. These elements will enhance the look of your fence and contribute to a more dynamic and engaging vertical wall garden.

Transform Your Fence with Evergreen Walls

Decorating your fencing can dramatically enhance the appearance of your outdoor area, turning it into a space that reflects your style and creativity. Whether you choose the lush appeal of an outdoor green wall, the cascading elegance of hanging artificial plants, or other creative ideas like painted murals or decorative panels, there’s no shortage of options to explore.
