Getting Educated on Screw Machines

Mueleworks,

Screw machines are really fun to watch. For the first few mins that is. Once you work in a screw machine shop for a while they get real old fast. The old B&S's will do pretty much what you say. A typical bolt would be made like so. Load the hex stock into a hex collet. You have a indexing turret set on the back, to come forth to a given stop length. The machine feeds the stock out till it hits the stop. Now the collet tightens. Your cross feed brings in a cutter that cuts the part to finished diameter. The turret indexes, and a geometic die head is popped into position. The geometric die head moves down the part threading as it goes. Then as it hits the shoulder it springs open, and backs off. Now the cutoff tool comes in, cuts off the bolt you just made. If you have a machine with a slotting attachment it brings the bolt by the slotting attachment to put a slit on it, and the cycle starts all over. If you want it to be a hex bolt I believe that is done with a rotary broach. I don't know if the old B&S's can handle this but I bet they can. They'll also do much more then just bolts and screws. They can make all sorts of little round parts. However if you have a part that requires machining at both ends that is a bigger problem. Then what you'll have to do is bring it onto a second operation lathe like a hardenge hand screw, and do it over there.

As to the setup I understand how it is done but don't know how to do it. The whole thing is run off of cams that are all timed together to do what you want. Setup is real hard if you don't know what you are doing. At the shop I used to work at my boss used to keep a few machines setup in very standard ways. That way when a part came in all he needed to do was slight modifications to the setup. If you have the work for them you can make tons of money as few people know how to setup and run one. My boss used to like jobs around -10,000 as he found the CNC scew machine shops couldn't be bothered with them untill the parts run hit the 10,000+ level. Thus he found that in our area most smaller quantity jobs like this went to a CNC lathe. He'd quote the job usually at 80% of what it would cost on a CNC lathe and get it all the time and then do it on a WWII production B&S worth about $300 today for sometimes $150-300hr! However to run these it helps to have a lot of cams and gears. As for pointing you in the direction on resources. I don't know. I'd have to look at it again, but I know the machinery's handbook has some stuff about making the cams. Perhapse they even have stuff on setting up a screw machine. If not a modern one, perhapse a Machinery's Handbook from the -'s would have one. I'd say if you can get it cheap enough and maybe some cams and such with it and want a toy to play with go for it. However keep in mind that it will be hard to really make real money with it untill you become proficient with setups. Or if you are a hobbiest really impractical unless you need +parts of something. Or if you want to set it up to run for months at a time if not years make parts in quantities of 500,000+ there it too will proabablly be impractical as this is a job you really want to do on a Multispindle, such as a Davenport or New Britian.

Direct Drive Electric Screw Press

Have you ever wondered how a direct drive electric screw press achieves precise forging? Let's understand its working principle, shall we?

A direct drive electric screw press is a single motor attachment connected to the shaft, which in turn is attached to the RAM/SLIDER. It operates on the principles of center gravity forging and servo motor control. With this technology, we can easily carry out precise forging tasks such as aluminum forging, aluminum alloy forging, titanium forging, including hip stem and toy forging.

This press operates efficiently, focusing on power saving and low-cost maintenance. It represents an advanced forging technology.
