Has anyone tried an ozone machine from Amazon for ...

If you are wanting to clean more deeply into cushions and fabrics, run the ozone bulb for 5 minutes max and then still turn it off (you don't want the concentration of ozone in the vehicle to continue increasing), but don't open the doors right away, let the moderate concentration of ozone in the vehicle remain to slowly work its' way more deeply into the fabric and cushions and do it's job. Don't let it go too long though (multiple hours), because the ozone will degrade things like plastic and rubber slightly with moderate to high levels of exposure combined with duration in the same way the sun degrades stuff over time.

Just make sure you buy the type of UV bulb that actually generates ozone instead of the type that only puts out UV light. The UV only bulbs are designed to kill germs and smells in the air and on any surface the UV light actually touches without generating ozone at all. As a result, penetration into fabrics is weak and anywhere there is a shadow won't be treated. Great for sterilizing surfaces that are hard to close off or isolate and hit with ozone, but not very useful for treating vehicle interiors.

This is the bulb I use for ozone treatments. Coospider brand, made in China. I have been using the same bulb for a couple years now and it still works great.

You can have a great working setup for less than $40 if you don't spend too much money on the thrift store lamp.

A much cheaper option is to go to a local thrift store and buy a regular desk or tabletop lamp that accepts a standard edison screw base lightbulb. Then buy a relatively inexpensive UV ozone generating germicidal bulb from Amazon, screw it into the lamp, and put the whole setup into the vehicle. Buy a cheap opaque tarp and drape it over the vehicle's windows so you can't see any of the UV light exiting the windows during treatment because it's harmful to look at the UV light directly when the bulb is on. Run the bulb inside the closed vehicle for 5 minutes max. Then turn the bulb off and open all the car doors and let everything air out until the ozone smell is completely gone. It will likely take about 10-20 minutes to fully air out if you are doing everything outside. All there is to it. When running the UV ozone bulb, I connect a long extension cord to the lamp and leave the lamp's power switch turned on at all times. I turn the bulb on and off by plugging and unplugging the male end of the extension cord from outside the treatment area.If you are wanting to clean more deeply into cushions and fabrics, run the ozone bulb for 5 minutes max and then still turn it off (you don't want the concentration of ozone in the vehicle to continue increasing), but don't open the doors right away, let the moderate concentration of ozone in the vehicle remain to slowly work its' way more deeply into the fabric and cushions and do it's job. 2 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Use Ozone to Remove Car ...

What is Ozone? What is an Oxidizer?

Ozone is a highly reactive molecule made of three oxygen atoms. It is an oxidizer, and is commonly used via ozone generator machines to purify air, despite recommendations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) against it. An oxidizer, also referred to as an oxidizing agent, oxidant, or electron recipient, is a reactant that gains electrons from another reactant during a redox reaction. In this chemical process, the oxidizer accepts the electron from the reducing agent, leaving electronegative atoms, often in the form of oxygen, to the substrate. Some common oxidizing agents include potassium nitrate, nitric acid, ozone, and halogens. Oxidizers are used to purify water, store energy, and bleach textiles, to name a few applications.

Reason #1: Bleaching

Ozone, despite its relatively common use as an oxidizer, can produce dangerous byproducts and damage materials commonly found in automobiles, such as steel and leather.  Ozone can have a negative impact on textiles and other materials relevant for the car rental industry. 'Materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings and fabrics' can be susceptible to bleaching or other damage from ozone use, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA, ).

Reason #2: Potential Harmful Health Effects

The Environmental Protection Agency most vehemently warns against ozone generator machines for air purification purposes, but they also warn against ozone air purification in unoccupied spaces due to potential harmful health effects. The agency warns that little is known about the chemical by-products left behind by ozone, and that the health effects from ozone generator machines could potentially transfer over to ozone gas treatments. These negative health effects from ozone machines include respiratory issues, such as increased sensitivity to infection, irritated lung tissue, and declined lung function.

What is a Safer Oxidizing Solution than Ozone?

Chlorine dioxide gas is a scalable solution that works to protect and sanitize vehicles in a way that ozone does not. Chlorine dioxide gas works by expanding to fit the container that it's in, meaning that wherever the odors in a car can reach, the gas can equally expand and eliminate the odor at its source. The gas works quickly and effectively'in as little as four hours for some smaller vehicles'while not damaging the textiles within the car. Chlorine dioxide gas, at the proper concentrations, has far greater material compatibility than ozone, as it does not have a bleaching effect on rubber, electrical wire coatings, or fabrics. PureLine's PV is a water-activated chlorine dioxide gas generation system. Simply add water, close the vehicle doors and vents, and let the 4 hour treatment commence. Cigarette, marijuana, and cigar smoke odors will be eliminated at a molecular level due to the oxidation properties of PureLine's chlorine dioxide gas.
