Success!! No signs of undue wear at 180,000 miles. The 1/2 shaft came off with relative ease and the inner CV joint was off the shaft and in my hand 5 minutes later. The grease that was still packed in the joint and was smooth as butter. No grit could be felt as I rubbed the grease between my fingers. After a through cleaning the CV joint looked great and I could feel no play or looseness that would make me think that this wasn't a new joint!
While everything was clean I applied the self-adhesive gasket to the inboard side of the joint with no extra adhesive. After the gasket was applied I remembered that I was supposed to wash the joint in hot soapy water with a clean hot water rinse to make sure the paint thinner that I used to clean the joint was completely removed. The gasket still stuck firm. After blowing out the remaining H2O with compressed air I repacked the CV Joint with grease and put it all back together.
All is well with the joint but now the steering wheel is ~5 degrees off to the left and the car pulls slightly to the right. I did not think that my alignment would be affected since the lower ball joint can only go back the same way it came out.
Any thoughts on the alignment issue... ?
