Newbies - what make and model metal detector did you buy?

On amazon if their sales figures can be believed the vast majority of sub $300 detectors being sold each month are chinese made detectors. If added all up the chinese detectors are around 10,000 per month sold.
Next comes the Garrett Ace line of detectors per month and Minelab vanquish series 400+ per month. These are just rough estimates added up in my head.

Why I say if you can believe Amazon sales figures is I almost never hear of newbies buying chinese detectors as starter detectors on this forum. Maybe one or two times, but one would think if there were 10,000 per month sold we would hear more about them on this and other forums. Maybe the chinese detectors are all being sold to people in china. It appears to me that the majority of new detectors purchase by newbies as reported in posts on this forum, most are from Garrett, Minelab, Nokta or Bounty Hunter. Which is a good thing. These companies low to mid priced detectors are excellent starting detectors for beginners. Just a shot in the dark, but I think most people who buy those cheap (sub $100) Chinese detectors probably get frustrated and give up on the hobby. There are a few exceptions, but most are junk. Maybe ok for kids to play around with but that’s about it.

Of all the really cheap ones I got for my Grandkids, the Dr Otek was the only one that worked decently. Nowadays I think there’s probably some much better options available for just a little more money. Maybe Nokta’s FindX for about $150. I think the vast majority of metal detectors sold in the world, are the cheap Chinese detectors sold online.

Most looking to get into the hobby are younger and aren't typically aware of internet forums for metal detecting. They'll Google something like "Top 10 metal detectors" which is a very bad move, or go directly to an online store like Amazon and buy one of those low cost, flashy Chinese detectors.

Nokta and Minelab know that, and that's why they both introduced detectors to compete in that market. Nokta introduced the FindX and Minelab introduced the Voyager. The FindX is made by Nokta, so it's a given that it will be excellent quality. The Voyager is made in China and looks like a rebranded "Pancky" detector. However, I would hope that even though the Voyager is made in China and looks like a rebranded Pancky, it's made to Minelab's specs.
This new surge in Google/Chrome AI can be so misleading and normally produces factually incorrect results.

So AI seems to be improving. Did the same search 2 months ago and it came up with chinese crap.
Well-written AI should get better with time. It has definitely improved on this one.
I'd be interested to know if your choice for your first detector was influenced by watching videos, or the opinion from experienced detectorists.
Both. I looked at many blogs and videos. I tried to vet the presenters slant/bias. People getting free stuff from vendors can be more "echo chamber" and less objective. A couple brands kept coming up. Then I thought about feature(s) I knew were a must, like waterproof... I live very near the beach. Clothes, shoes, gear... if it can't get wet, I really have no use for it.

Then I looked at price points. Entry level, mid and high. Low price points generally couldn't even meet my waterproof expectations. High end seemed like they were charging a lot of money for something that I suspected wasn't that much better than the mid price point. You see, I have a background in electronics, even though I spent my career in emergency services. There is a cutoff point where the electronics can only do so much. Now, the software is more of a wildcard. That software part is essentially impossible to sort out on the interwebs, unless everybody is trashing it for some reason.

I wanted a machine that was a little past my level of true understanding. Buy once; cry once. As I grow to learn the idiosyncrasies of metal detecting, beach reading, and specifically my machine, the weak link of this chain should be ME, not my equipment. I didn't want to feel like my equipment choice was keeping me from finding what there is to be found at any site, on any given time out.
Well-written AI should get better with time. It has definitely improved on this one.
Yes, I was going to write how bad it was, but it improved quite a bit in 2 months. A lot of controversy over AI firms using others data for free. I originally thought well Google has all the data in the world, then I remembered they don't have it they just link to the data owned by others. I guess social media sites like facebook own all the data via owner transfers from individual posts by legal paragraphs buried deep in their user agreements.

Where did google get the info about the Manticore and the Ace 400? Probably off some metal detecting forum. Thus the forum owners should at least get 13 cents for using their data. Nokta Simplex Ultra, plus i got accessories like a pouch, Excalibur digging tool, KellyCo hand trowel, Bluetooth headphones, Notka Accupoint nice pouch with three zipper compartments, screened bottom, and pinpointer sheath, a sheath to fit my hand trowel and knee padss
I purchased most of this from KellyCo in a bundle after talking to them and getting recommendations, they made me a nice "package" price. I don't remember the exact price, but it was competitive with any vendors sale prices at the time. I bought the digging tool from Excalibur, customized. I read quite a bit on-line and watched a number videos that influenced the accessories that I wanted. I knew a wanted a rechargeable, water resistant, machine. I didn't know too much about coils then and kinda wished I had gotten two coils and am holding off to either purchase a second machine with two coils or smaller coil for the Ultra after the first of the year. The accessories I knew I wanted based on what I had seen people use. Shortly after I got this kit I got a backpack big enough to fit everything on the inside without breaking the bank.
