The Best Patio Umbrella and Stand

After 30 hours of research and years of testing patio umbrellas and bases, we think that the 9-foot-wide Treasure Garden Market Aluminum Push Button Tilt Umbrella and 55-pound Article Paima Umbrella Base are the best for most people, whether they’re using one in a generous garden or a small apartment patio.

A patio umbrella is an invitation to laze and linger. Its shelter offers a cool respite from the sun and cheery cover from the errant summer drizzle. A good umbrella—and accompanying base—will ideally weather the elements for years to come and be mobile or adjustable as needed, without becoming a perennial source of frustration.

This rolling base is worth the price if you need a heavy base and want to easily move your umbrella during the day for optimal shade.

While more expensive for the same weight, this minimalist base is completely flat, making it a good choice if you’re looking for something super-sleek and low-profile.

This compact concrete base is streamlined, sturdy, and pleasant to set up and move around, with smooth edges, generous hand-holds, and two screws for added security.

This reliable umbrella will resist sun and wind damage more effectively than cheaper models and will likely last four times as long. It comes in dozens of color and finish combinations.

For an umbrella on its own, a base that’s 75 to 90 pounds is safest—but lighter will do if you close your umbrella when it’s not in use.

If you’re placing a 9-foot umbrella within a table, you can get away with using a lighter stand that weighs at least 50 pounds.

A common mistake people make with umbrella bases/stands is not buying one at all or choosing one that is not heavy enough.

When we asked landscape designers and patio-furniture experts which umbrellas they recommended, the name they gave us again and again was Treasure Garden. Durability separates an okay patio umbrella from a great one, and the 9-foot-wide Market Aluminum Push Button Tilt Umbrella should last longer than any of our picks. This is especially true if you opt for either Sunbrella or O'bravia fabrics, which our experts recommended for their resilience outdoors. O’bravia costs about $100 less and it’s not as durable or fade-resistant as Sunbrella, but it still performs great. Treasure Garden also has the most style options we’ve seen—including dozens of colors and patterns, double wind vents, and a choice of models with a push-button or crank tilt. The configuration we suggest offers the best value within the Treasure Garden line, including just the right features to make it functional—like a push-button tilt system and crank lift system—and omitting extras that drive up the price. The push-button tilt frame has a one-year warranty and the Sunbrella fabric has a five-year warranty (the O'bravia fabric has a four-year warranty).

If our main pick is out of stock, or you’re looking for a less expensive option, consider the Hampton Bay 10 ft. Aluminum Auto-Tilt Patio Umbrella from Home Depot. This model opened and closed more smoothly than other similarly priced umbrellas we tested. It also comes standard with an auto-crank tilt mechanism to angle the canopy—an upgrade feature you have to pay more for with our top pick. The canopy is made from Olefin fabric, which is not as weather- or fade-resistant as Sunbrella, but it is still known for durability and colorfastness. The umbrella comes with a two-year limited warranty from Home Depot, where this is an exclusive (Hampton Bay is the company's in-house brand).

Not everyone needs an umbrella that will last in the wind, rain, and sun for several years. If you’re looking for a light, serviceable option to use for a few seasons in your backyard or on your apartment balcony, our budget pick is the Sunnyglade 9′ Patio Umbrella. The canopy is hard to get dirty and simple to clean, and the whole umbrella easily fits into an included reusable plastic sheath for simple storage. This umbrella doesn’t come with a warranty, but for the price we think that’s not a terrible gamble.

The Article Paima Umbrella Base is a smooth, solid disc of molded concrete with rounded edges that won’t snag, and its handholds make lifting and maneuvering the 55-pound weight easier than other stands we tested. Two screw knobs in the base’s neck tighten the umbrella pole in place after you insert it. Compared with other bases made of concrete and steel, the Paima base falls on the lower end of the price range, but the quality and attention to detail still feel high-end.

The Abba Patio Round Steel Market Patio Umbrella Base is the most unobtrusive and elegant base we tested. It is a single, heavy—but thin—disc of powder-coated steel and robs the least amount of footroom if used under a table. Like our top pick, this base uses two screw knobs, rather than just one, to hold the umbrella in place. While it seems like a small detail, the knobs were the biggest and smoothest of any of the bases we tested, which made securing the umbrella pole easier and more pleasant. However, this is the most expensive base we tested within the 50-pound weight class; you are paying for the solid steel disc and aesthetic more than the function.

The Shademobile Rolling Umbrella Base has the ability to roll and pivot across a smooth deck or patio—a crucial feature for anyone who may not be strong enough to easily lift 50 pounds or more. The practical, no-nonsense plastic resin base comes empty, weighing about 20 pounds, which makes it easy to tote around before committing to a location. You then fill the volume with bricks, sand, or a combination of both for an extremely stabilizing maximum weight of 125 pounds; this weight is well beyond what any of our umbrella picks would require, but it’s nice to have the option of a heavier base if you live in a windy area.

Fabric

According to Bryan, the canopy fabric is the most important factor when choosing a patio umbrella: "Having fade-resistant and UV-treated fabric will keep the umbrella looking its best and provide adequate protection from strong sun exposure."

Sunbrella acrylic fabric is generally considered the gold standard in umbrella canopy material. Sunbrella is a solution-dyed fabric, meaning the fibers are dyed before they are processed, so they won't fade in the sun. Plus it's weather- stain- and fade-resistant. Less expensive alternatives to Sunbrella include polyester and olefin.

Tilt

Many patio umbrellas feature a tilting function that allows you to angle the canopy to more effectively block the sun without needing to reposition the umbrella. There are severaling mechanisms for doing this, including push-button tilts, in which you release the upright lock by pushing a button and tilt your umbrella to your desired position. Auto-tilt or crank-tilt umbrellas are only available in umbrellas with crank lifts. Once you've fully opened your umbrella, simply keep cranking until the umbrella begins to tilt to one side.

Lift

There are three types of opening and closing mechanisms for patio umbrellas: manual, pulley, and crank. A manual-lift patio umbrella is best for smaller, lightweight umbrellas, as it requires you to lift the umbrella with one hand and use the other to insert a pin to keep it in place (which can be difficult for short people).

Other umbrellas use a pulley-lift mechanism, in which you pull a line to raise or lower the canopy. Unfortunately, these lines are known to become frayed or finicky with use.

The easiest mechanism for opening an umbrella is going to be a crank-lift system, which works by turning a lever to open and close the umbrella. All of the umbrellas on our list feature an easy-to-use, crank-lift mechanism.

Stand

Most outdoor patio umbrellas don't come with a stand, so you'll need to purchase that separately. "A weighted umbrella base is necessary if your umbrella will be freestanding (if it's positioned in a table, the table will provide the structure)" says Bryan. "Some stands have wheels which are helpful if you want to move its location. If the stand is made of a concrete base, be sure to keep it from freezing in the winter if you live in a cold climate."

For a freestanding umbrella, multiply the width of your umbrella canopy by 10 to determine the weight of your umbrella stand. For example, a 9-foot umbrella will require a stand that weighs at least 90 pounds when filled with water or sand. For an umbrella positioned under a table, look for something around 50 pounds to secure a 9-to-10-foot umbrella.

More Patio Umbrellas to Consider

Mainstays Market Umbrella: The cheapest of all those we tested, this no-frills patio umbrella makes a great budget-friendly option for occasional use. However, the manufacturer does not state that it is UV-treated.

Pure Garden Patio Umbrella with Auto Tilt: This affordable pick comes in 10 colors, takes under one minute to assemble, and blocks sunlight so well that our screens look the same as they did indoors. Though we found this umbrella to be a functional option that offered plenty of shade, some of the materials might not wear as well with long-term use.

Questions You Might Ask

How should you secure a patio umbrella?

Safety can be a real concern when using a patio umbrella. In windy conditions, an umbrella that is not properly secured can go tumbling across the yard (or your neighbor's yard). Aside from making sure you have a heavy-duty umbrella stand, Bryan says it’s important to keep your umbrella closed when not in use. Many patio umbrellas will come with a strap or hook-and-loop fastener to keep them closed during windy weather. You can also add more weight to your base by using sandbags.

Are dark or light patio umbrellas better?

Dark patio umbrellas are better at blocking harmful UV rays because they absorb more heat from the sun to keep you cool and shaded. A darker umbrella also better conceals dirt and debris than their light counterparts, with the exception of bird poop. While we prefer dark patio umbrellas, for those who like the look of a light patio umbrella, there are still plenty of options that provide ample sun protection and shade for outdoor relaxing.

What is the most durable patio umbrella fabric?

Safety can be a real concern when using a patio umbrella. In windy conditions, an umbrella that is not properly secured can go tumbling across the yard (or your neighbor's yard). Many patio umbrellas will come with a strap or hook-and-loop fastener to keep them closed during windy weather. You can also add more weight to your base by using sandbags.

Most outdoor fabrics, such as Sunbrella, are easy to clean by spraying them down with water. You can also use a mild detergent to remove any grime. "We recommend using marine-grade cleaners to rinse off your umbrella," says Bryan. "Keep it open and allow it to dry completely before putting it away."

Some umbrellas even have machine-washable canopies. Be sure to refer to the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning.
