The results suggest that ozone could be more effective against COVID-19 than it was against previous coronavirus strains. Experiments during the SARS pandemic showed that a minimum of 1 ppm was effective against the SARS strain, an ozone concentration 10 times higher. “Transmission of the novel coronavirus may be reduced by continuous, low-concentration ozone treatment, even in environments where people are present, using this kind of system,” said Murata. “We found it to be particularly effective in high-humidity conditions.” Fujita Health University Hospital in Japan has installed ozone generators to reduce infection in waiting areas and patient rooms.

A virus has no defense against ozone, which had a 99.22% kill rate during the 2003 SARS coronavirus pandemic.5 Ozone has proven, wide-reaching sanitizing applications for homes and businesses. In laboratory experiments conducted by Kowalski et al, an ozone generator removed 99.99% of bacteria within 40-60 seconds of exposure to air ozonation.6 For serious odor elimination and virus disinfection of a large area in a short period of time, ozone generators far surpass air purifiers.

Practical Uses for an Ozone Generator

Ozone generators oxidize contaminants in the air, removing strong odors from chemicals, mold, smoke and decay. Low Power vs. High Power Ozone Generators

Advertisers often market low ozone-producing air purifiers as powerful ozone generators. However, these devices generate roughly 0.05 parts per million (ppm) of ozone, which is too little ozone to reduce contaminants. Rather they mask odors temporarily with ozone's pungent scent. Safely Performing a Shock Ozone Treatment

Any responsible person who observes precautions and follows the manufacturer directions can safely perform an ozone treatment of an unoccupied space. A shock ozone treatment refers to an enclosed area that has reached a high enough level of ozone exposure to perform a useful amount of cleaning and air purification. In testing conducted by the EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory, an ozone concentration of 10 parts per million was needed to kill toxic mold specimens in a low-humidity environment.

The ozone treatment may take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour depending on the size of the space and the power of the ozone generator. People, pets and plants must not be present when an ozone treatment is performed. After the ozone treatment, the air recovery time can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the air temperature and amount of ventilation.
