Although flux-cored gas shielded welding wire has the aforementioned disadvantages, it is still secondary compared to its advantages. The application ratio of flux-cored gas shielded welding wire is increasing. It is also an efficient and economical welding method worth promoting in the manufacturing of pressure vessels.Gas shielded welding wireLet's understand the advantages and disadvantages of flux-cored welding!
You will get efficient and thoughtful service from sino welding.
(1) High deposition rate: The conductive interface of flux-cored wire is much smaller than that of solid wire of the same diameter, significantly increasing current density under the same welding current. After filling iron powder in the flux-cored wire, its coverage rate is more than twice that of solid wire and 2-3 times higher than that of gas shielded arc welding. Flux-cored gas shielded arc welding is an efficient welding method.Gas shielded welding wire(2) Stable arc, less spatter, and aesthetically pleasing welds: Due to the high power density of the wire and the presence of a small amount of arc stabilizer in the flux, the welding arc is quite stable. The low welding current allows for quick transfer of spray, resulting in less spatter and improved weld formation.
(3) Strong adaptability of welding process: When using flux-cored gas shielded welding wire, due to the high proportion of metal vapor in the arc atmosphere, the static characteristics of the arc change, allowing for a stable working point within a wide range of welding parameters. Additionally, the matching relationship between welding current and arc voltage is not as strict as with solid wire gas shielded arc welding, enhancing the process adaptability and relaxing technical requirements for welding equipment.
(4) Good weld quality: Flux-cored gas shielded arc welding uses slag joint protection, allowing for sufficient metallurgical reactions between slag and molten metal. The deoxidation and denitrification effects are good. Therefore, it improves the mechanical properties of the welded metal, especially enhancing plasticity and impact toughness.
(5) Alloy composition of welded metal can be adjusted freely: The flux formula can be flexibly adjusted according to the mechanical performance requirements of the welded metal, meeting various performance and alloy composition requirements for new steel development.
(6) Low welding cost: The market price of flux-cored wire is higher than that of solid wire and other types, but considering improved welding efficiency and reduced working time, its overall welding cost is about 20% lower than that of solid wire gas shielded arc welding.Gas shielded welding wire
However, flux-cored gas shielded arc welding also has notable disadvantages:
High welding fume: During flux-cored gas shielded arc welding, due to the fast melting speed of the wire and easy combustion or evaporation of the flux, the amount of fume generated is significantly higher than that from solid wire gas shielded arc welding. This is detrimental to welders' health and visibility in the weld pool, which hinders the popularity of flux-cored gas shielded arc welding to some extent.
Currently, manufacturers of flux-cored gas shielded wires are working on developing low-fume flux-cored wires, with standards also specifying limits on fume generation. Flux-cored wires have a short storage time in the atmosphere; they can be divided into narrow gap and seamless types based on manufacturing processes, but most are narrow gap types. These wires can absorb moisture when stored in the atmosphere, increasing moisture content in the flux. Additionally, due to humidity, they are difficult to dry again. Therefore, it is essential to use them immediately after opening sealed packaging; any remaining wires should be stored in a drying box and cannot be reused after exceeding specified time limits. Welders must pay attention to this during actual operations.
