I love tools and having grown up in an era of hand tools, power tools still feel a little bit like magic to me. One power tool that has revolutionized my work are electric screwdrivers. These cut down the amount of muscle power needed to do a job dramatically, enabling me to tackle do-it-yourself (DIY) projects more efficiently and complete my to-do list before I run out of steam.

Electric screwdrivers provide enhanced control and precision, significantly reducing the risk of damaging fasteners or the materials you're working on. With features like adjustable torque settings and built-in LED lights, they make tasks easier and more accurate.

What is the best electric screwdriver right now?

Here I take a deep -- and somewhat geeky -- dive into the world of electric screwdrivers, testing some top contenders with real-world challenges to see which ones truly perform under pressure. I checked out their power, endurance, durability, and bang for your buck. After quite a bit of deliberation, my crown for the best electric screwdriver overall goes to the Lifegoo Mini Electric Screwdriver. This little dynamo really impressed with its long-lasting battery and the convenience of being pocket-sized and USB-C rechargeable. It might not pack the heaviest punch, but for practicality and frequent use, it can't be beat.

The Lifegoo Mini Electric Screwdriver really stands out due to its compact and lightweight design, making it a champion for tight and tricky spaces.

It offers a reasonable torque range of 0.25-0.35Nm, which is gentle enough to secure fasteners snugly without risking damage by over-tightening. For those moments when a bit more muscle is needed, this nifty tool allows you to manually increase the torque up to 3Nm, giving you that perfect "hand tight" force without crossing into the danger zone of causing damage.

Review: Lifegoo rechargeable mini electric screwdriver

As a bonus, the Lifegoo Mini comes equipped with a versatile 48-piece precision bit set. This set includes both standard and extra-long bits, the latter being ideal for reaching those challenging, deeply recessed screws. This feature-packed screwdriver offers both versatility and precision, making it a stellar addition to any toolkit.

And just as I'd expect, the online reviews for this screwdriver and exceedingly positive. I've been using this screwdriver several times a week for the past couple of years.

The SES Max features an ergonomic pencil-style grip that allows it to be gripped firmly for extended periods without fatigue. There's a single button that controls everything, and an OLED display to keep you informed.

It has a sensible torque range, offering enough power to break small fasteners free, but not so much as to damage things. The 500mAh battery can handle up to 900 precision screws on a single full charge, and the screwdriver can be recharged using the USB-C connector built into the storage case.

There are also four built-in shadowless LED lights for illuminating the workspace, which is super helpful.

Review: This is the smartest electronic precision screwdriver I've ever tested

The single killer feature of the SES Max is the motion control feature that detects whether you want to tighten or loosen a fastener. Fit the bit into the fastener, press the on button, begin to apply torque, and the screwdriver takes over. There's no need to fiddle and find the appropriate loosening or tightening button.

One of my all-time favorite electric screwdrivers is Hoto's 12-in-1, a tool that I reviewed about a year ago. I've also owned for a couple of years now. It's turned out to be great tool that has been able to withstand the test of time.

This is why I was more than happy to test the Hoto 3 Pack Snapbloq Modular Storage System. This kit consists of three separate parts. One kit comes with a precision electronic screwdriver and a set of bits. Another kit comes with a mini-sized rotary tool and a selection of grinding and polishing tools. The third kit comes with a three-speed mini drill pen and a selection of high-speed steel drill bits.

Review: Hoto 3 Pack Snapbloq Modular Storage System

All the bits come in stackable boxes for easy storage and transportations without losing something important.

This is a great kit for those looking for a selection of tools to tackle a wide variety of tasks -- from the basics like fixing and undoing fasteners to more specialist tasks such as polishing, grinding and drilling.

Here's one of my hardest working tools. The Hoto electric screwdriver exudes a robust, heavy-duty vibe that promises durability and efficiency. At one end, you'll find a standard 1/4-inch socket ready to accommodate a variety of bits. Just behind this is a user-friendly rotary knob, which toggles between three distinct torque settings, allowing for precision control depending on your task.

Review: Hoto electric screwdriver

Enhancing its functionality, this screwdriver includes a circular LED shadowless lamp. This brilliant feature illuminates your work area, freeing you from the hassle of juggling a screwdriver and a flashlight simultaneously -- a small but significant touch that makes a big difference in usability.

On the opposite end lies a USB-C port, modernizing the charging process by eliminating the need for proprietary chargers. This universal charging port adds an extra layer of convenience, making it easy to power up the screwdriver with the same cable used for many of your other devices. The Hoto electric screwdriver is a thoughtfully designed tool that marries strength with smart features, making it a standout choice for any toolbox.

Another product with very positive online reviews, which one going as far as to say, "if Apple was to make an electric screwdriver, this is what it would be."

Two years ago, I got myself a Bosch Go electric screwdriver and thing was amazing. It's been on my best electric screwdrivers list ever since, and it's been working incredibly hard on countless projects, indoors and outdoors, and it's still going strong.

The old Bosch Go has gone to a new home, and I've picked up a replacement -- the new Bosch Go 3, and this has a few big upgrades. It's become my new favorite when I need power.

Review: Bosch Go 3

First up, the micro-USB has been replaced with USB-C. I don't know about you, but micro-USB has been out of my life for a long time, and keeping track of a cable for one thing still stuck in the past was a pain.  There's also a bigger battery, up to 2.0Ah from 1.5Ah, which is quite a bump. I appreciate this when I've got a long job or forgotten to put it on charge after the last job.

There's also a ring light on the front of the screwdriver for seeing what you're doing, and more torque settings, providing finer control over working with fasteners and less chance of breaking something or rounding off the head of a screw.

It also features better ergonomics, and a much neater, more practical carry case.

What are the tariffs in the U.S.?

The recent U.S. tariffs on imports from countries like China, Vietnam, and India aim to boost domestic manufacturing but are likely to drive up prices on consumer electronics. Products like smartphones, laptops, and TVs may become more expensive as companies rethink global supply chains and weigh the cost of shifting production.

For more information, please visit Brushless Electric Screwdriver Manufacturer.

Also: Tariff war has tech buyers wondering what's next. Here's what we know

Consumers may also experience notable price increases for tools. Manufacturers are exploring options such as relocating production to countries with lower tariffs, but such transitions are complex and may not provide immediate relief. In the short term, shoppers should anticipate higher costs for electric screwdrivers due to these trade policies.

Right now, it looks like some tech may be exempt from the issued tariffs, but since it's always changing and developing, we are keeping an eye on it and will update you on the latest.

What is the best electric screwdriver?

I find myself using the precision electric screwdriver mostly for electronic repairs, the big impact driver for bigger construction and automotive jobs, and the others for those in-between jobs.

Ultimately, what I've done here is pick the best of the best in each category, and it's up to you to decide how many electric screwdrivers you have space for in your life.

How did I choose these electric screwdrivers?

When testing and reviewing the best electric screwdrivers to curate this list, I weighted the following factors:

  • Power: I've looked at a range of different electric screwdrivers, and the primary difference between them is power. I want a precision screwdriver to have enough power to loosen and tighten tiny screws found in things like smartphones and laptops but not so much power that it can cause damage. At the other end, I want all the power that a tool can deliver to free up rusty, stuck fasteners.
  • Battery life: I need my tool to be good for more than one screw. Unbelievably, I tested numerous electric screwdrivers that couldn't cope with more than a few screws before needing a recharge. That's just no good.
  • Durability: I tested each of the electric screwdrivers here on several hundred fasteners -- screws, nuts and bolts -- to help filter out the tools that are going to let you down.
  • Quality of accessories: If the electric screwdriver is supplied with screwdriver bits, I want these to be high-quality parts that won't break or damage fasteners.
  • Value: Tools are one of those things where you can spend crazy money on things. While this might pay off if you are a tradesperson and you use and rely on them daily, the average home user can get away with something a bit more budget-friendly. With these picks, you can rest assured that you're getting the best bang for your buck.

FAQs on electric screwdrivers

What size bits to electric screwdrivers take?

Most screwdrivers take standard 1/4-inch hex bits, and these are widely available. Note that precision screwdrivers take the much smaller 4 mm bits.

What is torque?

This is a measure of twisting force. In terms of what a screwdriver can deliver this is typically measured in Newton-meters (Nm) or inch-pounds (in-lb).

Someone who's familiar with using manual screwdrivers can deliver about 13 Nm/120 in-lb of torque. Precision electric screwdrivers usually peak at about 3Nm/26 in-lb, with the bigger ones are about 5Nm/44 in-lb, and impact drivers can go up to over 200 Nm/1,770 in-lb.

Are electric screwdrivers more powerful than regular handheld screwdrivers?

Regular electric screwdrivers max out at about the same power that you could deliver by hand, and that's because the limiting factor is how tightly you can grip the screwdriver.

With its different shape and the fact that it uses an impacting hammer action to work the fastener, the impact driver is capable of more power.

Are electric screwdrivers safe to use in high-voltage applications?

No, none of these tools are rated for high voltage. Electric screwdrivers are generally not safe to use in high-voltage applications as they do not have the necessary insulation to protect users from electric shocks. High-voltage environments require tools with special insulation to ensure user safety.

Is there a risk of damaging screws when using an electric screwdriver?

Not any more than if you misuse a regular screwdriver. However, if you are new to electric screwdrivers, I recommend practicing with the tool before using it for real-world jobs. Also, remember that the screwdriver bits themselves are consumables, and you'll need to replace them when they get worn.

Complete Guide to Electric Screwdrivers - Sartaj Singh Virdi

Electric screwdrivers are integral tools of service and production industry for some time now. Various brands of electric screwdrivers are readily available in India – from imported to ‘Make-in-India’ type. Some of the most prominent electric and pneumatic screwdriver brands available in India are DeWalt, Metabo HPT, Bosch, Skil, Black+Decker, Kilews, Conos, Kolver, Sehan, Sumake, Inde and more.

TYPE OF SCREWDRIVERS

There are three types of screwdrivers – manual screwdriver, electric screwdriver and pneumatic screwdriver. The first two names are self explanatory but a pneumatic screwdriver is a clutch type tool that slips at a preset torque. This helps the user tighten screws to a specified torque without any damage or over-tightening. These types of pneumatic screwdrivers allow you to work on many screws without causing any fatigue to the forearm or hands.

ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVER

As the name suggests an electric screwdriver is a portable electric tool that is used to screw and unscrew effortlessly. The frontal head of an electric screwdriver holds the screwing bit in a bit holder which has a magnet assisted quick release system. The bit holder on the front of an electric screwdriver helps you to rapidly insert and change a desired bit according to the screw head.

SELECTING AN ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVER

Selecting a right electric screwdriver depends on your specific requirement. You must take time to analyze your requirements carefully before buying one for yourself – a wrong electric screwdriver may be overkill or under-kill for your requirements.

Define Your Requirement: Define whether you will be using an electric screwdriver for the heavy duty construction works (buildings / real estate etc), mechanical workshops (car repair etc) or production assembly line (electronics manufacturing).

Frequency of Use: Define if you are planning to use an electric screwdriver for a couple of hours (like 2-3 hours) daily, then a cordless type would be a good choice. However, if you plan to use it continuously for many hours then a wired electric screwdriver would be a sensible choice.

Efficiency: Look out for the efficiency of an electric screwdriver particularly if you have to use it continuously and intensively for many hours on a daily basis.

Ergonomics: Look out for an ergonomically designed screwdriver particularly if you plan to use it for longer durations as it will avoid any hand or forearm fatigues. Ergonomically designed electric screwdrivers are easy to hold and are friendly to hands.

Design: Look out for the design that best suits your requirement. Like if you want a straight type holding screwdriver, right angle electric screwdriver (nearly similar to straight one) or a gun type (pistol type) holding electric screwdriver. This actually depends of the working area that you have while working.

Torque: Look out for the tightening torque of an electric screwdriver as it is another major point to consider. The higher the tightening torque the stronger the screwing force. Overlooking this aspect may just overkill or underkill your purchase. If your budget permits, you may go in for torque controlled electric screwdrivers – in which you can manually or programmably set the torque of a screwdriver to exactly match the requirement. These types of screwdrivers are particularly useful when you are working on a production line where all the screws of all the products manufactured are to be screwed on a specific torque. You cannot afford to have screws loose or over tightened – they need to be screwed in uniformity.

PNEUMATIC OR ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVERS

I have briefly mentioned about the Pneumatic Screwdriver in the ‘Type of Screwdriver’ section of this article. There is a difference between an electric screwdriver and a pneumatic screwdriver. Pneumatic screwdrivers use compressed air and are suitable for low-torque applications such as woodworking, electronic repair work or sheet metal repair. Whereas electric screwdrivers use AC or regulated DC power supply and are designed for applications that require high levels of torque. In simple words, depending on your torque requirement you select between pneumatic and electric screwdrivers. Pneumatic Screwdrivers are often more expensive than electric screwdrivers.

MORE ABOUT ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVERS

The power of an electric screwdriver comes from the dedicated motor inside it and the motor rating defines the torque it can produce. Some electric screwdrivers (the most powerful ones) are directly powered by 220V AC. Such screwdrivers are ideally suitable for construction works.

However other electric screwdrivers are powered using external transformers. A rule of thumb here says, the higher the voltage from a transformer the more powerful an electric screwdriver. Same goes with cordless type (battery operated) electric screwdrivers. For example, a 3.6 Volt battery based electric screwdriver is less powerful than an 18 Volt battery operated electric screwdriver. Another fact, an 18 Volt battery lasts longer than a 3.6 Volt battery and do not require frequent battery charging. Generally all cordless type electric screwdrivers come with lithium-ion batteries as they can hold the charge for longer durations and are far lighter than other batteries. Electric screwdrivers used for intensive screwing and unscrewing use are often known as impact electric screwdrivers.

Rotation Speed: Another aspect to consider when purchasing an electric screwdriver is the rotation speed of the motor inside. A corded electric screwdriver has a greater rotation speed than a cordless one. In this article I will share some of the rotation speeds and other vital information of some of the most widely used electric screwdrivers in India so that you can compare and decide as which one to purchase for your specific needs.

Weight: The weight of an electric screwdriver also plays an integral part when selecting one for yourself. Generally corded electric screwdrivers are far lighter than cordless electric screwdrivers for the same power. Batteries inside the cordless electric screwdrivers make them heavier than the corded ones.

Power Accessibility: If you have the power source (outlet) very nearby (like in workshops or assembly line) every time you use your electric screwdriver, then you can go in for a corded one. However, if you plan to operate it in remote areas (or outdoors) where there are no power outlets, then you can consider cordless electric screwdrivers.

Noise: If you plan to use an electric screwdriver in a closed environment or in a lab, then you should consider electric screwdrivers with brushless motors that has a noise level of well below 55dB(A).

Price: Another driving force that you have to look for when purchasing an electric screwdriver is the price. Most often than not, cordless electric screwdrivers are more costly than the corded ones.

Brand: The brand of an electric screwdriver also plays an integral role when deciding for a purchase. Unbranded electric screwdrivers are cheap and may claim eye catching specifications – however, they fail to perform when used for prolonged durations and may smell burning of coils when there is any voltage fluctuation or excess load. Brands like Bosch, Kolver, Conos, Kliews and make in India INDE are some of the foremost brands that you can easily rely on as they inherently come with OEM warranty.

Spares and Accessories: Even with a branded electric screwdriver, there is a little wear and tear from time to time due to moving parts inside. Electric screwdrivers may require spares and/or accessories readily available at arm’s length. So you need to look at if the company is willing to provide the accessories and spares in your city.
