I run red equipment now, but would consider something else. Less than $. Built in last 20+ years.

Cab/no cab? MFD or 2WD? Loader or no loader?

This would be my pick for reliability. Can't beat the DX tractors.

Lots of Deere 5x10 and 5x20 going strong around here.  A late 23, 25, or would be what I'd consider extremely reliable as well.  Haven't been around many but the Ford/New Hollands mentioned seem to go forever as well.  A Kubota is a nice tractor as well.

I bought a 685 2wd about 20 years ago, back when it had under hours. In those 20+ years, I have replaced the battery, alternator, the engine heater, and the rubber fuel return line. It is easy on fuel, and everything on it just seems to work.
It has a 4 cylinder diesel with amazing low-end torque, pulls right off idle, a standard 3 point, and both 540 and RPM PTO shafts, which I thought unusual for a tractor in the low 60 HP range. I believe the 95 series tractors are pretty much the same, with a few upgrades. Can't remember the hours of the top of my head, but it has quite a few, and still goes 100 hours without having to add oil. I do wish the hydraulics were faster, though (I think that's one of the improvements in the 95 series).

Defiantly not Kubota. We have 6 LHST's at work. 2 have had the rockshaft housings ripped off, and 1 broke in half under the floor board. They are all 4WD and have had many problems with front wheel bearings.

These tractors have Smith brooms on the front. They are not heavy. They work for a living and are driven by people who don't care. We have a few New Holland's that have been almost as bad as Kubota's.

Deere's have held up the best. The newer ones (R) have had a lot of emission problems. Mechanically they have been OK.

Neighbor has several series deeres from s to only a few years old, they have been junk, not run by the best help but tons of clutches, pto clutches, broken drawbar supports, shifter problems, and a thousand other things, lots of engine trouble on the newer ones. They run blue tractors for the mounted harvesters and I asked their mechanic what goes wrong with them and he said "I don't know, I never work on them." I asked the owner why he kept buying the green series tractors when the blue harvester tractors never break and he said "because the TW25 I had was junk and the Deere has been a great tractor"

I still have not quite processed that connection myself......... cowski

+2 for x84 and x85 tractors.

You can update the gear size that drives the hydraulic pump to 17gpm. Check Abilene Machine for those kits and new hydraulic pumps. RickB

because too many parts are unavailable any more. I have an 90' 885 and have found this a continual problem. Don't buy a JX series case or any of the A series caseih tractors. Pretty safe with the other series of caseih on the new Holland just avoid any series that is the same in blue. I am on third Kubota in 6 years and have put hours and all have been emissions tractors. No major problems, but these are the 100-110hp models. I believe it is the e series deeres you want to avoid. Poor fuel injection pumps and real pricy to fix or more is what I heard. Others will correct me if I'm wrong. Just heard the other day to not get any duetz models or agco with duetz models. Parts have become highly unavailable Mitchco

They don't use DEF but still have a DPF. The dealer has sent a mechanic several times to force a regen. Deere won't allow us to have the programming to do it ourselves. At least 2 of them have sat for weeks waiting on parts, a sensor I think.

Since you with red I suggest stay with them.

I have several of the CaseIH and McCormick C series, been great tractors, been built for years in England, descendent of the 85 and 95 series and the later series CaseIH utility tractors. These have the Perkins diesel engines, start great in cold weather, runs forever, etc. I have a CIH 995, CIH C70, and the McCormick C80, all about the same tractors. All are much less than $20,000, more like $10,000. Dan NW IA

You might reconsider the 20+ years part, as some of the most reliable tractors we have owned were built in the 80s and 90s. We have a Ford which is amazing, hardly a problem since new apart from batteries and filters and it has like hours. As mentioned John Deere or would be good too but even older. You can buy a nice for $12-15K here.

50/55hp utility tractor comparisons - specs all over the map

OK, first post for me.

I'm in the process of shopping for some more HP (currently have an Kubota B - I've put 900 hrs on it after buying it 5.5 years ago with 748 hrs). I figure 50hp to 50hp is about what I need and can afford. Must have HST.

Background on why I'm here (now), why this post:

I only had two dealers which were responsive. Of these two I have been able to check out three different brands. Those brands are: Kioti, Kubota and Mahindra.

My very first view glimpse of Mahindra's offerings was a (? engine date showed ) model year . Right away I noticed a wire harness hanging down from just in front of the rear axle. Not sure if this unit isn't prepped well, but this raises red flags for me. The loader control is really poorly positioned: dealer said that one could relocate it- makes one wonder how they could allows this kind of engineering decision to make it out the door! This unit has been sitting on their lot for quite a while and the salesman is clearly chomping at the bit to move it.

The Mahindra dealer also sells Kioti (or, if you prefer the other way around, the Kioti dealer also sells Mahindras). I got a peak at an NX that was being assembled. It had a cab. Pretty impressive. Of course, 45hp isn't enough so I got a quote for the NX (no cab). Lots of niceties. Rough quote comes out to about $ more than the Mahindra, and about the same as for the Kubota.

Lastly, and I was trying to avoid looking at them, was the Kubota. I have a Kubota and have been more than impressed with its ability to stand up to utter abuse (though I maintain it well). Knowing that landing another Kubota would mean ponying up a bunch more dollars (when I'm already looking at the pain of shelling out tens of thousands of dollars) made me hesitant to look. The dealer, not the one I got my current Kubota from (I'm going to see about a quote from them), was very responsive and allowed me to operate an MX. This machine is very similar to my B in that it's a totally no-frills machine. Everything is tucked up pretty well and looks to be fairly well safeguarded: mind you, I've managed to get crap jammed up in the core frame of my B, popping off the hydraulic return hose! (not sure if I'd be four-wheeling with a bigger tractor, but I never thought I'd be doing what I've been doing with my smaller one either) The quote I got for this was about $ more than for the Mahindra: included was one rear remote, which is standard on the Mahindra but not on the Kubota. I've got a lot of stuff to look after and I really can't afford to have things breaking on me (if something is going to break then it'll break on me!).

Usage is a combination of loader stuff, mowing and a bit of dirt work (grading). I've got 40 acres (mixed woods and grass- soft ground, which is why I went with my B originally).

End of background.

While comparing the specs of these tractors -Kioti NX55, Kubota MX and Mahindra - I see quite a variance among the specs for hydraulics. The Kioti NX has the highest total pump output/flow at 17.9 gpm, but the Mahindra with 14.7 total gpm rates their 3pt and loader capacities higher, and significantly more so. Maybe I'm not understanding something here, but greater pump flow and equal HP would seem to be what would come out on top would it not? I see that the 's cycle times are slower, does that have any bearing? The Kubota MX comes out at the bottom (they rate 3pt at 500mm though, so this spec can't be compared to the 's rating at the pins), and with less HP I can understand, but it's considerably less, so much so that I have to wonder whether someone is grossly misstating specs.

I am not sure what kind of loader performance I really need, other than it's good to have as much power as possible because I'll find a reason to use it. I don't do loader work on a regular basis, but will be wanting power to move around pallets (filled with wood, seasoned and dry- right now my B can barely lift one, let alone stack!).

3pt lift abilities is less important for me than loader abilities. I think that even the lowest spec-d of the bunch, the Kubota, has sufficient capacity.

PTO HP is pretty much even across the board.

It appears that Kioti doesn't split out their power steering and I'm wondering if that presents any issues. I can see that it could be a plus having more pump flow for other stuff if not turning, though I'm not sure (straight line stuff).

On somewhat of a tangent, I'm very hesitant to go with anything DPF/DEF. It's one reason why I decided to look at Mahindra. My other thought is to consider something a couple years older: MX perhaps; not sure about Kioti.
