We're looking into getting a payloader w/ up to a 2 cu. yd. bucket for loading turkey compost, lime, and gypsum. It needs to be about the size of a loader tractor because we pile the compost on a smaller unused feedlot, and it also needs to fit under pole barn that has maybe 14 feet of clearance. Right now we use a case with a westendorf loader, and it is getting the living daylights beat out of it. Probably looking for an older one to keep $$ low, but would look newer if it was worth it. Any ideas?

Could you be tempted to a big skid steer, runs circles around anything else in close quarters.

Probably not, we are loading a BBI spreader that rides high, and we already have a hard time seeing how well we are loading with the tractor we've got. Also, dad likes being able to get out safely with the loader up if he needs to hook up chains by himself. The lot is big enough that the tractor will turn easily, but we wouldn't be able to fit a large payloader like some big feedlot operators have.

I wouldn't worry about loading that spreader, I've been loading one all day with a NH LS180, can agree on the chains, they are aggravating if the bucket isnt low, but I garuntee that I can work circles around any loader with that skid steer. Yet to find anything nicer, maybe a small telehandler, but a skidsteer is nice and very nimble for its size, and are easier to find. Could always check the local rental yards, may have something you would like.

I really dont know about who makes a good small articulated loader but who has parts for them in your area. Look at those dealers first. I agree with you on the not getting off of a skid loader with the bucket up. Also from my experience skid loaders and older folks do not mix!!! Seems like something is always getting backed into. lol

We have Cat, Deere, and Case around us, but they are tractor dealerships, so I don't know how much support we'd get no matter what we end up with. We've never had a skidloader, and we'd probably end up getting a different loader tractor before we got one, personal preference I guess. We were thinking the payloader because you sit up higher like a tractor, but have better visibility and the whole machine is built for digging, while a loader on a tractor is just an afterthought. We just don't know which brand would be best.Volvo...
I've spent some time on an L90 which is rather big for what you want, but the basic concept is scaleable. An L70 would probably fit what you want since it's a considerably smaller frame than the L90. Those loaders have a very solid rep around here. Good solid, reliale, functional machines.
Cat would be my second choice mainly for their support here. They're better than volvo in that regard but I think volvo is a better loader.

Got a Volvo L25, Duetz powered, full cab, small, nice to operate, and handy. Had it for 7-8 years now and run the hell out of it, and its still in pretty good shape. Will cost more than a skid-steer, but I can see your point of wanting to sit a little higher compared to a skidsteer. Pops would probably like it too, lot easier to crawl in and out of, is for me anyways. I would suggest renting a couple different brands to see if it really fits your needs then make a decision. Can't help you on the brand , probably would choose whos closest and most accomodating. Good luck on your search ---GregCase W14, komastu, Deere, Cat 910, how about a kubota 520, lot of them around, dont know if big enough.

Besides checking the obvious, like the loader linkage and the articulation points, any major problem areas with any of them to watch out for?

Have you considered bidirectionals?  They are articulated like a small wheel loader and get everywhere the loader tractor goes.  Also look at the link on tractorhouse for construction equipment and it will take you to a site where you can see quite a few wheel loaders of different sizes.  Bobcat used to make one, Ingorsall-rand makes one as well as Case and John Deere.

The Bidirectional is too big to fit under our pole barn, otherwise we probably would have jumped at that. I've been to machinerytrader, but they don't tell you which ones are good or bad. For example, a Cat engineer buddy tested a bunch of brands, but they were all bigger. He just said to stay away from JCB.ohoh
