Proportional Solenoid Valves ' How They Work

Proportional valves are small two-port, normally closed, direct-acting solenoid valves. They respond precisely to the amount of input current applied to its solenoid. From a stabilized upstream pressure source, customers can expect precise and consistent variable output flow performance for millions of cycles. Output flow adjusts precisely to minor changes in input current.

Proportional valves can enhance pneumatic system performance with soft starts, precision stops, and reduced shock during operation. In closed-loop systems, proportional valves will deliver precise flow control and instantaneous response, even with minute adjustments from input sensors.

The ProControl' Offering

Today, Humphrey offers three standard valve models and two customizable valve platforms from our Engineered Solutions group. Standard models:

  • PV3: 0-30 LPM
  • PV10: 0-75 LPM
  • PC30: 0-225 LPM

Modifications to standard valves are possible and welcomed. Humphrey can optimize valve performance with an understanding of OEM customer requirements. Contact .

The ProControl' Servoid Series are tailored to specific customer requirements. Featuring very high flow from a low supply pressure source, the Servoid Series can deliver extremely precise and linear output flow with low hysteresis and high-resolution characteristics.

Proportional Solenoid Valve Drivers

Most OEM customers drive proportional valves from their onboard PCB. For others, Valve Drivers are available and are used to take input signals sourced from sensors and deliver appropriate output current to operate the solenoid. Customers use drivers to test, evaluate and use proportional valves on benchtops or in proportional valve projects. Humphrey offers it's driver with the ProControl' PCD.

Advantages of Proportional Solenoid Valves

  • Consistent operation without voltage changes
  • Tight seal at rest
  • Low hysteresis
  • Low power consumption
  • Excellent resolution
  • Compact construction

Proportional valve: advantages and challenges

The advantages of a proportional valve

A proportional valve features a vast array of advantages that are functional on an operational level. Here you can find a list of the most common benefits.

Precise regulation

Proportional valves are designed to monitor the systems' flow and pressure rate. They can easily adapt to many different contexts as they can be fine-tuned at any time in order to align with specific needs. Unlike solenoid valves, proportional valves can be adjusted as they allow more control over the system's regulation processes.

Energy optimization

One of the main advantages of a proportional valve is a significant increase in energy efficiency. As a matter of fact, these systems need less manual operations to adjust flow and pressure rates, resulting not just in an economic benefit, but also in a sustainable optimizationof energy consumption.

Versatility

Proportional valves can adapt to many different contexts and applications - from industrial automation to Food&Beverage and delicate medical systems. They can also manage a variety of fluids and pressure rates, ensuring excellent performances in every field they may be applied to.

Enhanced safety

Accuracy and constant monitoring mean improved safety. In fact, these systems prevent sudden fluctuations that can lead to operational shifts and malfunctions.

IT Integration

Nowadays, proportional valves are more dynamic and smart. The integration of IT electronics enables operators to monitor performance in real-time, easy access to reports, and feedback mechanisms, enhancing their functionality and reliability.

The challenges a proportional valve needs to deal with

While the proportional valve advantages are significant, it is important to be well aware of certain challenges that may arise.

  • A complex design could result in difficult installation and maintenance. For this reason, proportional valves should be handled by skilled experts or may require specific training and equipment.

  • When it comes to proportional valves, economic considerations are instrumental to understanding if the initial investment is worth it. In fact, these systems can cost more than solenoid valves, although they can improve energy consumption and reduce maintenance operations.

  • Proportional valves can be extremely sensitive to external factors such as temperature variations and electrical interference due to the presence of sensors installed on them. These elements could affect their overall performance and precision.
