Can I use wire with my comb binding machine?

Krish Technologies posted this on Jul 2, 2015

< Over the years, a number of customers have asked me whether they can use twin loop wire with their plastic comb binding machine. These customers often don’t want to have to buy a brand new machine but like the look and feel of twin loop wire binding. However, the answer to their question isn’t as simple as it seems. You see, they actually do make twin loop wire that is designed to work with the plastic comb binding hole pattern. With that said, if you want to use these wires you are going to need a way to close the wires. What is Spiral-O Wire? Let me explain a little bit more…There is a product that we carry called Spiral-O Wire. This wire has 19 loops and is designed to work with the hole pattern from a plastic comb binding machine. Spiral-O Wire is sometimes called Wire Combs or Ibico Wire and was originally designed for use with some of the older Ibico binding machines. A number of the older Ibico plastic comb binding machines also included a twin loop wire closer on the front of them to allow users to use both plastic combs and wire. This 19 loop wire was designed for this purpose. What Equipment is Needed? As the Ibico brand has been phased out by GBC and all of the older Ibico plastic binding machines have been replaced with new models, they no longer have the twin loop wire closer on the front of them. This presents a problem in trying to use these spiral-o wires since you can’t use the wires without a way to close them. One of the only options left is to purchase a Twin Loop wire closer. However, since twin loop wire closers are not incredibly cheap this option usually only appeals to users who have larger electric plastic comb binding machines. Otherwise, it is often advisable to simply buy a low end 3:1 pitch twin loop wire binding machine (the supplies are cheaper). This being said, if you have one of the older Ibico binding machines that has a wire closer included you are in luck. The Spiral-O binding supplies that we carry will work perfectly with your machine and you will be able to use both plastic combs and wire depending on your needs. These Spiral-O binding supplies are available in Black, Silver, White, Blue and Red and in sizes up to 1″ in diameter. If you aren’t sure what type of wire binding supplies that you need to work with your machine simply give us a call. Our trained sales representatives will be glad to help you find the correct supplies for use with your machine.(Read More)

A Guide To Paper Binding & The Types Of Binding Machines

Read Length:

There are several reasons why you may need a paper binding machine. These machines are commonly used in offices to create company manuals and give documents a polished look. In this post, we’re taking a look at paper binding, what it is, and the types of paper binding machines. We’ll also look at how much binding machines cost, and which binding machine is best for you. Let’s begin.

What Is Binding?

We’ll start by answering the question “what is paper binding?” Binding refers to the process of securely collating multiple sheets of paper, and these sheets are often placed into a cover. If the sheets are bound inside a cover, the cover is usually thicker than the sheets of paper, keeping the pages firmly secured.

Do I Need A Binding Machine?

Binding can be done manually. However, we recommend using a high quality machine. Using a machine guarantees that you will be left with completely professional results and an outstanding finish. Also, binding sheets of paper together by hand can be time-consuming, and you may be prone to inconsistencies. However, using a binding machine will save so much time, and will also ensure complete consistency with each movement. For this reason, machines are the best paper binding options available today.

How Much Do Binding Machines Cost?

The cost of our paper binding machines starts at $125. However, the exact price of a machine will depend on several factors, including its features and capabilities. Therefore, you should consider your individual requirements and budget before deciding which binding machine to buy.

The Types Of Paper Binding Machines

There are several types of book binding and paper binding methods available today, which are all excellent choices. The types of paper binding machines include:

Comb Binding Machines

Comb binding is a common type of binding that involves a plastic spine holding pages together. Before the plastic comb is inserted into sheets of paper, holes must first be punched into the paper. Many machines automatically offer this feature. The plastic comb can then be inserted into the holes, leaving you with an exceptional end result. Plastic binding is an extremely affordable option, and has been used for decades.

Wire Binding Machines

Another popular choice of binding, wire binding, is similar to comb binding, but uses wires instead of plastic. Wire binding costs slightly more than plastic comb binding, yet has a more professional appearance. Wire-bound documents are also stronger and more secure than those bound with a plastic comb. Therefore, they are an ideal choice for documents and leaflets that are needed for long-term use.

Thermal Binding Machines

Thermal binding uses heat to bind pages together. It is one of the best paper binding methods available, leaving you with an ultra-professional look. Here's how it works. Sheets of copy paper are first inserted into a binding cover. The spine of the cover contains glue that is activated by heat. When the cover is inserted into the machine, it releases heat that activates the glue and binds all of the pages together.

An excellent thermal binding machine is the Fellowes Helios 60 Thermal Binding Machine. It is one of the best high-performance thermal binding machines available, and features 1-step binding for complete ease of use. Watch the video below to see how exactly the thermal binder works.

Spiral/Coil Binding Machines

Spiral binding, also known as coil binding, involves a long metal or plastic coil holding pages together. Spiral binding is preferred to comb binding, as it is a stronger option and increases the lifespan of a newly bound leaflet or book. Coil binding is slightly more expensive than comb binding. However, its benefits make up for the difference in price.

How To Use A Binding Machine

All binding machines work differently. Some will require simply inserting the binding cover and pressing a button, whereas others will involve pulling a lever after inserting the cover. We recommend checking the training manual of your machine for information about how to use a binding machine.

Whichever machine and method you choose, when you buy a binding machine from Whitaker Brothers, we guarantee that you will be left with high quality results.
