Hard chrome plating , hardness up to 65 ~ 70HRC, thickness 0.075 ~ 0.25mm, chrome -plated has high hardness , wear resistance , good corrosion resistance and able to maintain long-term bright surface, the process is relatively simple and low cost. But the hard chrome plating hardness will low rapidly by the release of the stress at high temperature. So its working temperature can not exceed 427 ℃.

Can anyone tell me why chromium plated ball valves may not be acceptable in a refining environment?

I have come across a client guideline which just states that chromium plated balls are not accptable. It does not state any specific services just the general instruction to not use.

Nothing on alternative types of plating either.

I am looking at using a Fisher V-Ball which as a standard for the heavy duty trim comes as a 317SS ball with Chromium plating. The service is Kerosene at ambient temperatures.

Your customer's standard is arbitrary, based probably on an unfortunate experience they had years ago. I Suspect they had a unique service or a run of poor quality components and the Cr Plt peeled off -causing headaches.

THey are not right, but they write the checks.
