As you dig into labeling options for your product container, you'll see one term pop up again and again: BOPP. It stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene and it's an incredibly popular label material.

There are countless benefits to choosing BOPP for your product label —  printability, durability and customizability, just to name a few. Like anything, BOPP has its limitations, but across container types, product categories and label designs, you'll find BOPP specified as the facestock more times than not.

What, exactly, is BOPP?

BOPP is polypropylene film which is stretched in both machine and cross directions during production. And a lot of the differences between BOPP and other films can be traced back to this manufacturing method.

BOPP vs. other films

The biaxial orientation of BOPP material aligns the polymer chains, increasing the film's modulus and tensile strength. Machine-direction oriented (MDO) films, which are stretched in only one direction, are less rigid and more comfortable than BOPP. Un-oriented films offer a bit more conformability for squeezable containers but are less easily printed and dispensed.

The manufacturing method of the film, and the inherent properties of polypropylene films, lend BOPP labels a range of properties like:

• Clarity, allowing brands to achieve the “no-label” look.

• Water, UV and chemical resistance, making BOPP suitable for even the most acidic products and moist environments.

• Excellent printability, especially as BOPP is often equipped with a topcoat which anchors the ink to the surface of the film better.

• Rigidity, making BOPP labels easy to die-cut, dispense and apply the label to your container.

Is BOPP the right material for your product label?

Label material selection is about finding a construction that works with your container shape, meets your aesthetic preferences, will perform in your product's environment (e.g., shower, outdoors, kitchen cupboard, etc.) and fits within your packaging budget.

You'll start with your label vision — how you want your label to look — and then find those materials that will bring it to life without wrinkling, degrading or popping off your container throughout the entire product lifecycle: Manufacturing, storage, shipping, retail display and customer use.

Material selection conversations never start with, “Do I use BOPP or another material?” BOPP is chosen so often simply because it checks all of the boxes in many situations, is widely available and competitively priced.

When you shouldn't use BOPP

During the selection process your label printer will typically ask questions like:

• In what environment will your product be used?

• Can you describe your vision for the look of your label?

• Are you incorporating embossing into your label design?

• Do you need your label to be “tear-able?”

If you answered “yes” to the last two questions, you shouldn't choose BOPP. This material does not have the ability to be embossed. It also is too strong to be torn by hand, but can be cut instead of torn, if need be.

In regards to the environment, BOPP will degrade in the extreme conditions. If your product will be used or stored outdoors, you'd do well by choosing a vinyl or polyester label film instead.

But in practically every other situation, BOPP will work just fine — and the decision about whether or not to use it boils down to budget and aesthetic preferences.

Want a rich, textured feel? Then estate paper is a good choice. Need a bar code label? A cheaper paper label will probably suffice. Want your consumers to see directly into the container? Then clear BOPP is perfect.

A quick walk-through of what's possible with BOPP

Nearly any label vision can be brought to life with BOPP — about the only thing you can't do is emboss them. They're easily die-cut, meaning you can get BOPP labels in any custom shape. And you can choose between two varieties colors: Clear BOPP to achieve the “no-label” look or white BOPP to make your label graphics pop on the shelf.

Achieving the “no-label” look

Clear BOPP labels can be designed, printed and applied to give the illusion that the graphics are directly printed on the product container. To achieve this look, you'll need to carefully consider your graphics, container and the color of your product.

Your label design should have thick lines, larger text and high-contrast colors outlining any art (e.g., a dark green leaf outlined with a lighter green color). All art should be in contrast to the color of the container or the product, if visible. And this look is best achieved on smooth, shiny surfaces like glass, rigid plastic and coated paperboard.

Playing with laminates to make your labels pop

Protective laminate layers are essential on BOPP labels to prevent ink from scratching and running. But it doesn't have to be a purely functional feature.

Gloss finishes create reflective, eye-catching labels. Matte finishes over BOPP diffuse the light and give the labels a soft glow. Either way, the lamination you choose can help tailor your desired label look to match what appeals to your target customer.

So why is BOPP the go-to material for film labels?

Well, to put it simply, it's easily customized, it looks good on the shelf and it performs in almost every product use environment. We are a BOPP film supplier. If you are interested in our products, please contact us now!

1. What is BOPP film?

1.1. Definition

BOPP (Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene) film is a type of plastic film that has a wide range of applications in the packaging, labeling, and laminating industries. It is produced by extruding polypropylene resin into a thin film and then stretching the film in two perpendicular directions, known as biaxial orientation. This process enhances the strength and durability of the film, making it resistant to tearing, puncturing, and other forms of damage.

BOPP Films are the substrate of choice for food packaging all over the world due to the inherent moisture barrier properties, seal ability, high clarity and graphic reproduction, and shelf appeal that they provide, as well as the best possibility of the pack having a monolayer or homogeneous structure.

It is most often used as a co-extruded heat-sealable reverse-printed film for the purpose of food packaging. In the field of labeling, it is favored because of the benefits it offers in terms of yield (the lowest density of 0.55 for the IML orange peel effect), as well as its recyclability with PP containers and other materials. BOPP Films are in high demand all over the world, which is mostly due to the growth of the flexible packaging sector.

1.2. Benefits of using BOPP film

BOPP film become a common type of plastic film used in a wide range of packaging, labeling, and laminating applications due to its numerous benefits. The following are some of the key advantages of using BOPP matt film:

Shelf life extension

The BOPP film offers the best moisture barrier of all the regularly used plastic films, and its metalized version offers the best oxygen barrier to the goods. These two characteristics of BOPP films are crucial for food packaging because they increase product shelf life and decrease food waste.

High clarity

BOPP film has excellent transparency, which makes it an ideal material for packaging applications where the visibility of the product is important. This clarity allows customers to see the product clearly, helping to increase sales and improve the overall aesthetic appeal of the packaging.

Product quality

Due to its limited gauge spread, BOPP film offers constant and exceptional seal integrity in addition to its barrier capabilities. The food packaging business also benefits from strong heat seal strength, reduced seal initiation temperature, a wide sealing window, and superior machinability.

Aesthetic/Graphics

Clear BOPP films' excellent transparency makes it possible to provide product packaging with a high degree of visual appeal. In this film, half-tone printing tasks with multicolor printing may be easily completed for high-quality graphics. Excellent gloss, great opacity, and exceptional whiteness in the white opaque film type provide product packaging with an appealing appearance.

The superb metallic look of the metalized film variant makes your goods stand out on the shelf. The ability to do post-lamination procedures like foil stamping, UV spot coating, and embossing to improve the visual appeal of product packaging is made possible by the material's high surface tension.

Versatility

BOPP film can be easily converted into bags, pouches, laminates, and other forms of packaging, which makes it a cost-effective and efficient solution for many packaging needs. Its versatility allows manufacturers to tailor the packaging to the specific needs of their product, whether it be for presentation, protection, or both.

Density

In comparison to all other regularly used flexible packaging films, BOPP films have a special quality. Low density promotes the idea of using less plastic per product by increasing yield during conversion. Low density leads to lighter rolls that are easier to handle since they weigh less per roll than other plastic films of the same length.

Sustainability

Is BOPP film recyclable? In comparison to other plastic film substrates like polyester, BOPP film has a comparatively low carbon footprint. Due to its eco-friendliness in flexible food packaging, BOPP Film is the second most favored substrate after cellulose film. Low melting point materials need less energy to change from one form to another. Reprocessed BOPP resin granules are often used to create injection molded components, furniture such as chairs and tables, and other home products like seat mats.

Cost-effectiveness

BOPP film is an economical choice for packaging and labeling, as it is readily available, easy to convert, and has a low cost per square foot compared to other materials. This cost-effectiveness makes it an attractive option for companies that are looking to reduce costs while still providing quality packaging for their products.

3. How is BOPP film made?

In the flexible packaging sector, BOPP (Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene) film has been utilized for many years. It is well regarded for its affordable price, superior optical and mechanical features, and exceptional gas barrier qualities (particularly water vapor).
Below is a detailed demonstration of the BOPP film manufacturing process:

Step 1. Raw material feeding system

Isotactic Polypropylene, a semi-crystalline, thermoplastic polymer, serves as the primary raw material in the center layer. While ethylene-propylene copolymers and/or ethylene-butane-propylene copolymers are used for the outer layers. A hopper system is used to introduce these ingredients into the extruders.

Step 2. Extrusion

The materials are melted and heated to 200–230°C within the extruders before being fed into the extrusion head, where they emerge as a foil.

Step 3. The foil cooling

The foil is then brought into direct contact with a cylinder that has been chilled before being submerged in a water bath to cool the melt.

Step 4. Machine direction orientation (MDO)

The film is subsequently passed over many rollers, which raise the temperature and prepare the film for longitudinal stretching (machine direction). By moving the foil between the rollers that spin at increasing rates, stretching is accomplished. The polymer chains are aligned at this point after the foil has typically been stretched up to five times its original length. The mechanical qualities of the film may be improved at this step, and the thickness can be cut by up to five times.

The film is heated again after stretching to remove the tension created during stretching (annealing phase).

Step 5. Transverse direction orientation (TDO)

A quick-moving chain of metal jaws grabs the film on both edges once it exits the longitudinal stretching zone (tenter clips). The film is stretched transversely by the diverging rails after being heated up in an oven in the middle (i.e. stretching in the transverse direction up to 9 times its original width).

The macromolecules align at this point, but this time in a transverse orientation, improving the mechanical characteristics of the film and reducing its thickness by up to 9 times. After stretching, the chain and the film converge, allowing the film to balance off the tension that built up during stretching (annealing phase).

Step 6. Thickness measurement and flame treatment

The film enters a new processing step at which point the thickness is automatically measured (along the entire width). After that, one of the faces is given a flame or corona treatment to prepare the film for the subsequent conversion processes, specifically to change the surface that will serve as an anchor for materials like ink (for printing), glue (for laminating), or metal (metallization process).

Step 7. Reel winding

After being wound around a reel, the film is then sliced to the specific measurements.

Step 8. Film measurements

The following are the primary metrics that the final product is subject to:

  • Density, grammage, and thickness
  • Elastic modulus, elongation at break, and tensile strength
  • Haze (opacity) and Gloss (sparkling appearance)
  • The friction coefficient between films and between films and metals
  • Sealing strength and threshold °C
  • Temperature stability (heat shrinkage)

The film has at least three layers and a thickness between 15 and 60 microns; the center layer is the thickest and primarily responsible for the mechanical qualities, while the two outer layers provide the film with different characteristics (i.e. heat-sealing properties).

In order to completely fulfill the application criteria, additives may be added, depending on the ultimate application the film is intended for.

4. BOPP film raw material

BOPP (Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene) film is produced from PP (Polypropylene) plastic resins. This type of plastic is harder than PE and is considered to have the general characteristics of good tensile strength, and higher transparency than other kinds of plastic. Besides, BOPP film is also known as a thin film, with a thickness of 10 ~ 40 microns. It is due to the low density of PP particles, only 0.90 g/m3.

Currently, EuroPlas is proud to be the world's No. 1 filler masterbatch manufacturer, proudly bringing customers unique plastic raw material solutions to help their factories optimize production costs and improve the competitiveness on the market. A crucial consideration is the label material to use. BOPP film labels are used in various applications and situations, such as food cans and package labeling. But, exactly, we should know what BOPP is? Is it the most optimum choice for the company’s sticker?

BOPP and How Does It Work?

BOPP is an ordinary plastic labeling resource. Biaxially-Oriented (BO) Polypropylene is what it symbolizes as (PP). The term “biaxially oriented” applies to a sheet that has been stretched in two ways, making it better and more translucent. Polypropylene is a flexible material utilized in various applications, including tags, food containers, transparent containers, and more. Available Variety of BOPP Labels

The King Chuan Packaging team produces excellent, personalized tags for various applications to a wide range of sectors using two types of BOPPs: white & clear BOPPs.

White BOPP

White BOPP film labels are the most prevalent, as they are non-toxic, exceedingly robust, and humid. It features a powerful, long-lasting stickiness that adheres to various surfaces. White BOPP material is preferred by wellness, attractiveness, and personal care goods producers. White BOPP, on the other hand, is utilized for food labeling. King Chuan Packaging about our specialty is BOPP materials if your items will interact with chemicals or water.

Clear BOPP

Transparent BOPP labeling film is long-lasting and humidity resistant, with the added feature of near-invisibility. Transparent BOPP film labels make it look as if there is no labeling, allowing your item to shine through. Even black bottles and glass containers can be used with clear BOPP. Wine and cosmetics, in particular, want to have a “no-label” appearance.

Additional Advantages

BOPP comprises tear-resistant, takes a wide range of ink formulas, and is reasonably priced. BOPP is a good solution for areas that may become wet or filthy due to its strength, durability, and adhesive properties.

BOPP tags in white and clear have been one of the most preferred and long-lasting solutions for the packaged goods market. You can have a look at the China BOPP film supplier for a cost-effective solution. Biaxially oriented polypropylene has always been a minimal cost of polymer utilized in both labeling and food container shrink wrap.

“No Label” Look defies categorization

Many CPG firms rely on visual displays to sell their work more alluring. WHEN APPEARANCE IS IMPORTANT, transparent BOPP tags offer companies a “no label” appearance. Consider candy, pastries, steaks, salads made ahead of time, and fruits and veggies. Individuals purchase CPGs by looking at photographs on restaurant menus, much like they do with meals. They would like to see fresh fruit, fresh veggies, and loads of chocolate chips in the cookies. Transparent BOPP is advantageous for items with a distinguishing hue since those shades will shine out among the goods on the rack.

Flatness

BOPP tags in white and clear are smooth, so they adapt quickly to boxes. It is especially true for non-uniformly shaped commodities, such as cured meats, or oddly shaped packaging, such as spheres. BOPP labels come in white and transparent and may be used on almost any product packaging.

Resistant to Oil and Water

BOPP labels, both white and clear, are oil and water-resistant. BOPP tags benefit salad, beverages, packed fruits and veggies, spices and herbs, honey, and other personal care goods. Coatings, gasoline, and lubricant, all used in the workshop, are excellent options for this labeling.

Lower Toxicity

White and transparent BOPP labels are suitable for CPG companies in the food industry due to their minimal toxicity. Polypropylene is a tricky substance that won’t contaminate other products or people’s hands. BOPP is safe to use on CPGs because it is constructed from FDA-approved polymers.

Exceptional Strength

BOPP is formed by expanding a transparent film manually in both the machine and transverse directions (thus the term “biaxially oriented”). This method produces a sturdier output compared to cellophane or similar materials. In addition, the production technology allows for lower material prices.

Low Prices

BOPP-based products have been present since the early s. White and transparent BOPP tags are an accepted practice that may cut your expenses as a Food business because of big firms’ over 40 years of effort in this material. When you merge the inexpensive cost of BOPP with the help of a professional branding business, your items will stand out on supermarket shelves in the fiercely competitive packaging industry.

Significance of a Customized Wine Label

Provenance and Prestige

Contemplate the impression you want to make on your consumers while creating your customized wine label layout. Many producers are mindful of their wines’ reputation and origins. Customers should be able to appreciate the vineyards’ scenic look and history, the vintners’ competence, the integrity of the components, and the heritage of the manufacturing phase.

Educative and Entertaining

Consumers will be informed and engaged by great personalized wine labels. Information about the wines that real wine connoisseurs appreciate interest them. People will grab a wine with a lovely look and turn it over to check all the information, from the grapes varieties to the sort of barrels used for maturing. These films are chemical and solvent resistant, making them ideal for food packaging. As a result, there is a lower danger of chemicals from the product, making it harmless.

BOPP films can be waterproof. This allows it to come into touch with many liquids or be exposed to high humidity without degrading the quality. BOPP films come in various styles, allowing you to select the one that best complements your branding, logo, goods, or visual work. BOPP films are ecologically safe and resistant to harm, ensuring that the items’ overall look and quality are preserved. Because BOPP filmmakers are constantly developing, they are now generally acknowledged worldwide. The films are in high demand and extremely popular, indicating that your product has a high degree of acceptance among potential distributors and customers.
