Types of Chiller Chemicals

What are Chiller Chemicals used for?

If you want to learn more, please visit our website Huateng.

Chiller Chemicals are used to minimize corrosion to closed loop water systems. It primary purpose is the removal of the corrosive substance by the means of passivation, precipitation, or adsorption. Passivation works best for laboratory chillers, industrial chillers, process chillers and for other closed loop systems. Passivation inhibitors form a protective oxide film on the metal surfaces. Their protective films are tenacious and will rapidly repair itself if damaged. Please refer to our Closed Loop Chemical Chiller Guide for more information.

What Chiller Chemical do I use for our closed-loop water system?

The most common and most cost-effective closed loop chemical used to passivate your water system is a Nitrite, Borate, and Silicate closed loop chemical. For very critical closed loop systems, a straight molybdate product is used to control corrosion.

How much chemical do I feed to my closed loop water system?

Ask what the feedrate ppm (parts per million rate) is of the chemical.

How do I add the chemical to the system?

For closed loop water system, the product is typically added to an industrial pot feeder.

How long will the chiller chemical last before it needs to be replaced?

7 to 10 years. Nitrite takes many years to convert to Nitrate. Once the product has converted to Nitrate it is no longer provides proper passivation.

What water treatment tests need to be performed?

Monitor the water conductivity and nitrite residuals. For closed loop water systems, 800 to ppm of nitrite residual must be continuously maintained.

We have two popular closed loop corrosion inhibitors:
  • ChemWorld / D - The difference between Chemworld and Chemworld D, is the "D" product has a P Indicator for ease of detection.
  • Chemworld 811 - Is designed for food regulated facilities or water systems where incidental food contact may occur. Chemworld 811 is also approved for use in food grade glycol water systems.
  • ChemWorld SM35 - Is a popular product for critical chilled loop closed loop systems or where the closed loop temperatures are above 45F and ongoing bacteria problems exist. Sodium Molybdate is a more expensive choice for controlling corrosion within your water system.

Chiller Water Treatment

How do I chemically treat a chiller?

Chilled Water Treatment chemicals require a

corrosion inhibitor

to prevent excessive corrosion. Closed Loop Chemical 338 is a Nitrite/Borate/Silicate inhibitor. The is the chemical of choice for Chilled Water Treatment.

Sodium nitrite

is an excellent metal passivator and will minimize chiller system corrosion. Sodium nitrite is a food source for bacteria development, so it is important to monitor the system for bacteria growth if your chiller operates above 45 degrees.

Chilled Water Treatment systems that often operate above 45 degrees should implement a Sodium Molybdate based chemical to minimize system corrosion.

Bacteria monitoring

is recommended because of the higher water system temperatures.

Bacteria monitoring is recommended for all systems. Bacteria growth may lead to underdeposit corrosion and localized corrosion pits. This condition may lead to water leaks and early system failure. Bacteria that develops as slime may decrease the cooling system heat transfer efficiency and increase your energy costs.

Improper treatment may lead to excessive corrosion. In this case, excessive iron corrosion may also lead to iron build up on heat transfer areas and decrease the systems efficiency. This condition will decrease your heat transfer efficiency and may increase your energy costs. A good Chilled Water Treatment chemical will minimize any corrosion issues.
