Cold Foil Printing | Cold Foil Hard Facts

After a brief introduction to the world of Cold Foil Indexing, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about the different machines that offer this technique. We chose the three stand out indexing machines on the market today.

Heidelberg FoilStar

From the Heidelberg website:

FoilStar allows you to choose between versions with and without an index function. The version with index function enables uninterrupted, cost-effective use of the foil as foil transportation stops when foil is no longer transferred onto the print sheet (for example, if the foil travels over the gripper margin or cylinder gap). This is a single-web version with a minimum width of 550 millimeters (21.65 in) and an indexing range of 200 to 750 millimeters (7.87 to 29.53 in) from the start of printing. Foil indexing in the format is possible. Up to six webs from 80 to 1050 millimeters (3.15 to 41.34 in) can be used for the option without an indexing function. Foil indexing in the format is also possible here.

DGM Foildex

From the DGM website:

The most expensive part of cold foil printing is the cold foil itself. DGM Foildex Technology replaces older cold foil systems which use the equivlent of the circumference of the blanket cylinder, about 37″ for each sheet that passes through the press, irrespective of the amount of foil needed for that particular job. Reducing cold foil waste also has a significant environmental impact on an already fully recyclable product

Manroland InlineFoiler

From the Manroland website:

Manroland’s InlineFoiler is a groundbreaking enhancement solution that meets market demands for more creative, more eye-catching and more vibrant print.

Using the InlineFoiler, printers can cold foil and overprint a full spectrum of colours inline on a broad range of substrates in a single pass and it can be combined with delicate embossing and effect or spot coatings or varnishes for maximum impact.

It is compatible with all presses in the ROLAND 700 B1 & 500 B2 series and can be used with conventional or UV inks, the InlineFoiler delivers exact print and foil registration, more precisely, more cost-effectively and quicker than any hot foil process available on the market.

Enhanced print means clear product differentiation for marketers and retailers and being a patented high value technology it offers a strong return on investment for printers.

Puan Litographica saves time and money with Eagle Cold Foil ...

“The system does what they say and more.” José continues, “once we made the decision to install the Eagle System on our Komori press, Eagle had us up, trained and running live jobs in just 5 days start to finish. Working with Eagle this closely has made us feel like part of their extended family.”

“Having the Eagle System has enabled the Puan packaging jobs to be foiled in-line without any secondary process saving time and money for us and our customers.” Cold foil uses a printing plate for the same high definition in the printed foil text and images as on the rest of the package. “With hot foil, colors had to be ordered in advance to be applied in a separate process. As the cold foil process is overprinted, any color can be used or changed at the customers direction. We went from 3 to 5,000 packages per hour in an after process to 8,000 packages per hour with the foil applied in-line.”
