Hot foil stamping machine for the space? - Discussion - Discourse

For my project in Applying foil to bookcloth? thread, I’m looking into possibly buying a cheap hot foil stamping machine (£170) because it seems like most UK-made, high quality machines are way outside of “hobbyist” price ranges. (Used for £350+, new for £800++).

However it does seem like this type of machine might be something useful for the space? These types of machines can apply foiling or even just nice deboss/emboss effects to cloth and leather projects, and if they get hot enough can help do branding on softwoods or even hardwoods.

So with that in mind it would bring some synergy between the Mini CNC and the laser + sewing spaces, as you can use the Mini to carve the aluminum and bronze stamps used on your lasercut or sewn projects. [1]

I never have any contention when booking time on the Mini so I’m not sure if we consider it underutilized. (I’ve had members tell me that most tasks the Mini can do are usually better suited for the laser or the Big CNC.)

  1. Do we think this would be worth the space such a machine would take up?
  2. Do we usually plan for somewhere a machine could go before organizing a pledge drive?
  3. And critically… Is there even space for a hot foil press somewhere?

[1] Admittedly the on-loan heat-press can do this too, but I’m not sure if we have guidance on how much pressure we can safely apply, and if it can be used with alu/brass stamps where the pressure won’t be spread evenly across the entire press’s face: Small Heatpress (Swing Arm)

Personally I think it would be a good addition if we can find the right place to host the machine. I wanted to start assembling some book binding equipment/tool chests for the space since I started but never managed to make time for it. Feasibly part of the screen printing area? Re-name the area print making and binding?

I always think it is a good I des to have machines that don’t get cross contaminated with other areas, plus they tend to do their job better Than some thing that ‘can do’ the job

I think I’ll let this post simmer for a week but my most likely route is going to be to but the cheap machine myself and familiarize myself with it, then try to make enough fun stuff with it that i can convince the space to crowdfund a better one.

(and if someone in the future finds this post and wants to use it, I’ll loan it out for sure, just dm me)

I’d at the very least be interested in using it if that’s okay? I’m binding a book at the moment and would love to do some foil pressing

I’m new to the space so I’m still working how everything fits together, and don’t feel like I can really chime in on how good an investment it would be.

At the same time, can you achieve the same thing with a hot plate, and a stamp (which I think you’ve already made)

Hot Foil Stamping Machine - Leather Machinery - Leatherworker.net

Hi all.

In short, i was looking around online for Hot Foil Stamping Machines, and i came across this.

https://workonleather.com/collections/stamping-machine

Anyone have any experience with these, or knowledge on what sort of quality one can expect to get?

I know it´s no high end equipment, but for anyone with limited budget and not an everyday need for it, could these be a good purchase?

Best Regards

Johan

A bit of an update.

I have been offered now a chance to buy a hot foil stamping machine, not even with my own money.

Before i pull the trigger on a buy...i am still a bit confused about this machine, and also it´s origin. I cannot find a link now, but somewhere i know i saw " this machine " for around 600 - 800 Euros, but it had a different number on the front. Basically it was this machine in any other sense as i could see.

Anyone else that might have any insight of it, and if not if someone know of an alternative.

My needs

* " Easy " to line up and straighten the stamp, preferably with some form of screw in or click in option.

* Adjustable heat.

* Something somewhat known brand or reliable if it breaks to get it fixed or parts.

* Budget topping around 350 Euro, with some wiggle room.

The machine is the cheapest part of the equation.   The letters start at about the price of the machine itself and you will need several sets of them.  At a minimum a double letter set just to get started.

I've used inexpensive steel letter sets set up on an inverted clothes iron to get heated and clamped wooden blocks on the leather piece  (marked) to make my gold foil lettering as often as I've used it.  (Fairly infrequently)

The foil machines are fine for mass producing repeated lettering. Like a set of a dozen identical pieces.  Otherwise it just isn't really cost effective.

Usually it's just someone's name...not something that difficult to do once.

The heated iron rollers that can emboss a repeating pattern in gold foil on a piece....that one is a fine purchase. ,(like a desk blotter, leather table, or leather box) You can usually get that to pay for itself rather quickly.

Just my thoughts.  Your mileage may vary.

What interested me with this machine is it´s size. My own one weighs at about...a lot. As i can remember, at least 100 pounds +.

Anywho... What i find intriguing is portable size and the ease of lining up the brand.

I will get my machine back next week or so, so i´l be posting pics and info about it and maby i can get some help in how to best line up what i have and perhaps not be needing another one.

As for my stamps.. i had a few we ordered in Sweden, but the making of them was a bit less than optimal. They did good prints, but you had to " guess " the lining up part since they did not center it on the block they cut it from.

I will be ordering new stamps for the future projects, and as for lettering, that´s another headache as well. For such, i have seen these soldering pens more or less you add letters to in a row and then press... but me i don´t do much lettering at all anyways... More interested in gold foiling books and details on smaller bags and hunting gear etc.
