"Youth is not appreciated at my workplace." A friend who works as an investment counsellor once confided in me. I've been thinking a lot lately about how youth is often seen as a disadvantage in the workplace. But I looked back at my experiences and found a different perspective. In 2022, I was the youngest product marketing manager at Meta. In 2019, I was the youngest regional marketing functional lead at ShopBack. In 2015, I was the youngest brand manager who went on to work across 4 brands and multiple divisions at L'Oreal. From my experience of being seemingly the 'smallest' person in the room, I can confidently say that age is not the key determinant. In fact, a beginner's mindset was what paved the path forward for me in every challenging moment. It allowed me to approach each new role with a fresh perspective and a hunger for knowledge. And while I may have lacked the years of experience that some of my colleagues had, I made up for it with added hours, brushed up skill sets and an insatiable curiosity. I saw that most people actually want to see you succeed. The opposite of the opening statement is also 'true'. Speaking with a friend who is a writer last weekend, she lamented that society is unkind to people above their 50s like herself. This is where being open-minded and tapping into our collective stories and wisdom will develop more empathy and change. It also got me thinking about some other notable figures who have defied age stereotypes in their respective fields. Take Cheyenne from Hell's Kitchen season 21, for example. At just 21 years old, she became the youngest contestant to ever receive a black jacket. Or Choo Sung Hoon from Physical 100, who at 47 years old proved that age is just a number when it comes to physical fitness. And let's not forget Harrison Ford, who at 80 years old recently clinched a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The one thing that ties them together is the confidence they have built by doing the work and not discounting themselves. Fast forward to today, I am no longer that person with the youth tag. But one thing stays the same, my Day One mindset.
