Surface safety valve (SSV) is a hydraulically or pneumatically actuated fail-safe gate valve for testing oil and gas wells with high flow rates, high pressures, or the presence of H2S.
The SSV is used to quickly shut down the well in the event of overpressure, failure, a leak in downstream equipment, or any other well emergency requiring an immediate shut down.
The valve is used in conjunction with an emergency shut down system(ESD) and normally installed upstream of the choke manifold. The valve is remotely operated either manually by push button or automatically triggered by high/low pressure pilots.
When a remote station is activated the emergency shut down panel acts as a receiver for the air signal. The unit translates this signal into a hydraulic response which bleeds the control line pressure off of the actuator and closes the valve.

NOTES:
1. The above referred design codes are for guideline purposes only. Other sizes, configurations, and pressure ratings are available to meet most applications.
2. Equipment is designed/certified to API 6A PSL 3 PR-2, NACE MR, DNV 2.7-1, 2.7-3, CE/PED, NORSOK standards as applicable and documented on the individual Equipment Specification Data Sheets (ESDS).
Surface safety valve (SSV) is a quick closure equipment in well line in case there is any emergency like overpressure, leakage and etc.
SSV is remotely operated by an emergency shutdown device (ESD), which can be triggered automatically by high or low pressure pilot actuators. If an emergency occurs, SSV can prevent explosion and reduce human injuries.
A number of SSV models are available for different well conditions (pressures, temperatures, and flow rates) and with various connections, such as hammer union and flange. Hammer union is interchangable with Weco brand.
SSV is designed and maked under API 6A standard. and relief valve can reduce shut time to 3 seconds.
